Are you training or are you just “working out?” If you have a specific goal in mind that you are trying to achieve, then TRAINING is the best option for you. Now some of you may be asking, what’s the difference between training and working out? Let’s take a deeper dive into the topic and discuss what separates the two.

Let’s start with “working out.” Some people simply love exercising, lifting weights, running, pretty much just moving! They enjoy the grind, pushing themselves, getting sweaty, and getting the good workout in for the day. And there is nothing wrong with that! There are lots of people who might not be working towards a desired goal, but they workout just for the sake of working out. Working out is fun, and has many benefits to it which may be someone’s reason for getting in their daily exercise. All of this is great, but it may not be what’s best for everyone, especially those with a desired goal in mind, or those with specific needs.

Training is defined as “teaching, or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge or fitness that relate to specific useful competencies.” In other words, working towards a specific goal or skill. Whether the end goal is related to sport performance, weight loss or gain, or any health-related area, it is important to have the right plan to get there. For example, if the end goal is to get faster on the field, but you don’t do a single sprint at full speed, do you think you’re really going to get faster? Or let’s say the end goal is strength, but you don’t do any sort of heavy lifting. You can probably guess that you won’t get stronger. Now training is not just specific to the goal, but also to the individual. You hear us say it all the time that “everybody is different.” What we’re saying is that one training plan may work for one person, but it does not mean it will work for another. Everybody has their own set of skills, strengths, and weaknesses. It’s important for your training plan to adhere to all of them. Let’s strengthen those weak areas and give them extra attention, and also enhance your strengths even more!

If you have specific goal in mind that you want to achieve, make sure you are on the right plan and heading in the right direction. If you feel lost, have questions, or just need a little guidance, feel free to reach out and ask! When training you may find that something that was once working is no longer getting the job done, and that’s okay! Time to switch it up and find a new plan and keep the momentum going towards that goal!
